Bob Mintzer Big Band CD, the latest of several recordings with MCG Jazz, is further adventures of Mintzer’s world class New York big band. This album further explores the big band tradition, contemporary classical music, Latin rhythms, and a usual supply of conversational big band writing with a small band sensibility. Kurt Elling, the band’s regular vocalist for the last several years makes an appearance on the Pat Metheny tune “Minuano,” and true to form, takes the music to another level. The CD include six original compositions by Mintzer including the cult favorite, “Swangalang,” “Swing Out” and a moving tune about individual freedom to create art / beauty / jazz – “Freedom Song.” Other tunes on the album arranged by Mintzer include Arlen/Mercer’s “My Shining Hour,” and a unique, decomposition treatment of “Someday My Prince Will Come.”
