SUMMARY:We Always Swing Jazz Series
DESCRIPTION:Marty and Jay Ashby Quartet \nSundays @ Murry’s — Two shows 3:30 pm & 7:00pm. Doors open 1 hour prior to curtain. \nThere are a number of U.S. cities that have remarkable jazz lineages: New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles and\, for that matter\, the two that sit on either end of the Show-Me State. Then there’s Pittsburgh; no longer the Steel City it once was\, it’s always had a tremendous jazz scene. The Jazz Series has always tried to attract greatness; sometimes\, where and how it arrives surprises even us. This is one of those instances as we present a sibling co-led quartet featuring four seasoned musicians that call Pittsburgh home. Guitarist MARTY ASHBY and brother JAY ASHBY\, a trombonist\, are multi-taskers; both instrumentally talented\, they are educators\, producers\, arts administrators\, GRAMMY® winners and much more. The other two members here are in-demand bassist Dwayne Dolphin who\, as a leader/co-leader has released some 10 titles\, but who also has worked with John Hicks\, Arthur Blythe\, Stanley Turrentine\, Geri Allen among many others. Drummer Roger Humphries drumming intersects with Horace Silver\, Nancy Wilson\, Joe Henderson\, George Benson and a host of other luminaries.

SUMMARY:MCG Jazz at the Mt. Lebanon Library
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Craig Davis is on a mission to raise Michael “Dodo” Marmarosa’s profile in the jazz consciousness.\nPart of that stems from hometown pride; a fellow native of Pittsburgh\, Davis has spent most of his career as an active and in-demand member of the Steel City jazz scene. He also recognizes parallels to his own approach to the piano in Marmarosa’s\, as both men blend classical influences with a taste for progressive jazz and a spirited lyricism.\nJoined by guitarist and executive director of MCG Jazz the music of Dodo Marmarosa will come to life. \nTo observers of the jazz scene during the late 1940s\, Marmarosa would have seemed a safe bet to join the pantheon of bebop pianists alongside the likes of Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. He had worked in bands led by most of the major swing-era bandleaders\, including Tommy Dorsey\, Gene Krupa\, and Artie Shaw; he recorded with Charlie Parker on Bird’s seminal Dial Records sides; and worked with legendary musicians including Lester Young\, Barney Kessel\, Lionel Hampton\, Slim Gaillard\, and Mel Tormé. But by the end of the decade Marmarosa’s star had already begun to fade. He returned to his native Pittsburgh for health reasons and became a near recluse for much of the rest of his life. Craig Davis and Marty Ashby will discuss and perform Marmaros’s music and share their knowledge of this legendary Pittsburgh artist. \nJoin us for an evening of music! Hear the music of a legend\, and learn about this piece of Pittsburgh Jazz. \nThis is an IN PERSON event. Registration required.

SUMMARY:A Night to Remember: Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra Comes to Carnegie Carnegie Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Andrew Carnegie Free Library is pulling out all the stops for its 2023 annual benefit! It will be the last benefit before the Music Hall closes for renovations in January 2024. \nPittsburgh Jazz Orchestra is comprised of the region’s finest and busiest jazz musicians. However\, this fabulous 17-piece ensemble rarely performs as a full band. In terms of both PJO’s sound and size\, the acoustically superb Music Hall is the rare perfect fit! Anqwenique Wingfield\, one of Pittsburgh’s most versatile vocalists — equally at home interpreting jazz\, opera\, classical music and soul — joins PJO for the evening. \nAlmost as memorable as the concert\, a party follows throughout the ACFL&MH’s 35\,000 sq. ft historic landmark facility – in the Lincoln Gallery and the Studio. If the night is fine – and why wouldn’t it be – the party can spill out into the lovely Library Park. Tempting food and drink are part of the festivities. If you come early\, join us at the Library’s circulation desk for a pre-concert glass of prosecco. \nJune 10 supports the Library & Music Hall’s wide range of services\, programs and performances\, while getting us that much closer to “Completing the Carnegie Carnegie.” We’ll be a little more dressed up than usual\, but A Night to Remember also showcases the magic that can be found on a day in and day out basis. \nPlease join us!\nTICKETS\n$150 for reserved orchestra seats ($100 tax-deductible)\n$75 for open balcony seating ($25 tax-deductible) \nOnsite parking is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. We have also arranged for free parking and shuttle service from the Nortek Building located at 102 Broadway Street\, Carnegie\, PA 15106. To reach this additional parking location\, cross Mansfield at the light. It is a five-story white building next to WesBanco. A free shuttle will take you to our building from this parking lot and return you to your car after the event.

SUMMARY:Eliane Elias at Catalina Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Hot off her 2022 GRAMMY win for Best Latin Jazz Album for “Mirror Mirror\,” and Latin GRAMMY Nomination for Best Jazz Album\, internationally acclaimed recording artist\, pianist/singer/composer/arranger Eliane Elias’ distinctive musical style and artistry is one of the most celebrated and recognizable sounds in jazz and Brazilian music. She blends her Brazilian roots and alluring voice with her virtuoso instrumental jazz\, her classical and compositional skills\, while she consistently displays her piano mastery and ability to integrate the many artistic roles she takes on. With 31 albums and over 2.4 million albums sold to date\, Eliane Elias has a strong presence on Spotify with over 600\,000 monthly listeners and over 26 million Spotify listens of her song “Little Paradise.” She has toured 74 countries\, is a four-time Gold Disc Award recipient\, a three-time Best Vocal Album winner in Japan and winner of the 2018 Edison Lifetime Achievement Award in Holland\, to name a few accolades. Her 2019 and 2021 albums (Love Stories and Mirror Mirror) were both voted “Downbeat’s Best Album of the Year – Masterpiece” and as most of her previous releases\, her recordings hit #1 on the jazz charts worldwide. To date Eliane has won two GRAMMY Awards\, one Latin GRAMMY and has been nominated 10 times in 5 different categories. On her new album\, Quietude released Oct. 14\, 2022 she transports us into another world with a lusciously relaxing journey into the Brazilian bossa nova. Eliane’s live performances showcase her piano\, vocals\, arranging and compositional skills\, together with her charismatic personality\, bringing a wide spectrum of musical experiences and unique presentations to the audience. Melding her immense talents in jazz\, Brazilian\, classical\, and pop music\, Eliane Elias is as Jazziz magazine has called her\, “A citizen of the world” and “an artist beyond category.” \n“Elias’ intoxicating vocals emote the ambient calm of a forest after a soft rain; her vibrancy is a force unto itself. With powerful artistry\, her naturally prodigious talent is even stronger as the years pass—a feat capable only by the true elites of the musical world.” ***** – DownBeat \nThe Brazilian pianist and singer Eliane Elias commands the keyboard with a forceful two-handed muscularity that belies her image as a blond older sister of the mythical “Girl from Ipanema.” The more percussive her piano becomes\, the more she opens up a song and reimagines it in what might be called a romantic carnival groove…a celebration of the vitality of a culture overflowing with life and natural beauty.”\n– The New York Times
