In the past decade\, it is in the world of jazz (a genre that is close to her heart) that Ms. Austin has been building a solid international audience. \nThe New York native is in constant demand globally for live performances\, thanks to a legacy of recordings that started in 1955; she continued through the ‘60s with success as a teenage R&B star before establishing herself as a mainstay among jazz and soul audiences through her ‘70s recordings. By the ‘80s Ms. Austin became known to the wider international audience as a result of the Grammy -nominated “Baby Come to Me” and “How Do You Keep the Music Playing”\, her early ‘80s classic duets with James Ingram\, masterminded by musical godfather Quincy Jones. \nUnquestionably a 21st century renaissance woman\, Patti Austin continues to create milestones in an incredible career; a further testament to her status as a member of that rare breed: a true artist whose creativity knows no limits.

SUMMARY:Central PA Friends of Jazz Fundraiser Honoring Steve Rudolph
DESCRIPTION:Steve will be playing in concert with a band of some of his favorite musicians from over the years. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime performance for Steve\, and you don’t want to miss it! \nFollowing the concert\, event guests will join Steve for a light reception. Rumor has it that Steve and his musician friends may start a jam session at the reception… \nA co-founder of the Friends of Jazz\, Steve retired as executive director in October 2019. This gives Steve more time to play\, compose\, and teach. However\, our commitment to sharing live jazz doesn’t end with Steve’s retirement. In addition to celebrating Steve’s years of service to the Friends of Jazz\, This One’s For You! will expand the community of supporters we need to ensure that jazz continues to be a major part of the cultural landscape of Central Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Yellowjackets
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 24\, 2021\,  7:30 p.m. +  Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\,   7:30 p.m.  \nThe Yellowjackets have consistently forged ahead in their evolving artistic statements. The band has recorded close to 30 albums\, been nominated for 17 GRAMMY® Awards\, and has adventurously amplified the eclectic\, electro-acoustic soundscape creating a unique jazz sound since its fusion beginnings. \nWhile the Los Angeles-based Yellowjackets have been a creative force on the jazz scene since 1981 when they recorded their eponymous debut\, their fourth Mack Avenue Records album\, “Raising Our Voice\,” once again ups the ante with bold new strides. \n“The band keeps moving forward\,” says saxophonist Bob Mintzer who joined the group in 1990. “It’s one of the few partnership bands in the last four decades. It’s democratic\, laissez-faire and accommodating to everyone in the band to contribute. We’re constantly reinventing ourselves as a reflection of what’s happening in the world.” \nThe Jackets are comprised of pianist/keyboardist/co-founder Russell Ferrante\, bassist Dane Alderson in his second recording with the group and drummer Will Kennedy\, who joined the band in 1987 and then in 2000 took a 10-year hiatus before returning to the drum chair. \nMintzer sees a bright future for the Yellowjackets. “What attracts me about the group is how stylistically broad we are\,” he says. “There are no barriers. We’re free to try new things without making the music overly complex. I always say this is the band you always wanted to be in. We’ll see where we go next.”

SUMMARY:Marty is at MCG Jazz
DESCRIPTION:I hope that you and yours are staying safe and healthy. Thank you for your patience during this extended pause in the MCG Jazz programming. The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact all performing arts in Pittsburgh\, as well as across the country. The priority remains to keep everyone in the audience\, on stage\, and behind the scenes healthy and safe. \nIn an effort to keep everyone safe\, MCG Jazz paused all previously planned in-person concerts and educational events. When restrictions are lifted and we can safely hold in-person events\, we will. I do not have a date set to reopen our doors\, but we are proactively working with artists\, their managers and agents to present these artists when it is safe to do so. \nThis decision is based on information from local and state governments\, the CDC\, and the WHO. All measures we are taking are grounded in our understanding of public health science and infectious disease control to create a safe environment when we are permitted to reopen. \nThe MCG Jazz mission to preserve\, present\, and promote jazz has never been stronger. \nEvery day and in every way\, MCG Jazz will continue to do what we do best – preserve\, present\, and promote jazz. The focus has always been to keep patrons\, artists and staff safe and provide an enjoyable musical experience. So\, until we are able to be together in our music hall – we are coming to you! \nStarting in September 2020 we are providing you with a wide variety of interactive offerings to keep you connected to MCG Jazz and bring the New Jazz Age to you: \nLive Performances – When restrictions will allow\, we will host a socially distanced live performance from the MCG Jazz stage and stream it LIVE! Subscribers will have a special code to watch the performance at their convenience within 48 hours. \nLive from the Archives – We are streaming concerts from the 33-year history of MCG Jazz. Relive a show you attended or see one you may have missed. \nMCG Jazz Spotlight Show – Every Friday\, Saturday and Sunday\, MCG Jazz hosts a 60-minute radio show on The Pittsburgh Jazz Channel\, WZUM\, 101.1 FM or stream online at wzum.org. \nPittsburgh Jazz Legends Spotlight – Each month we will post an oral history of one of the MCG Jazz Pittsburgh Jazz Legends and feature photos\, music clips and memorabilia from each artist throughout the month. \n[Visit mcgjazz.org to see the full schedule of events.] \nWhat happens now and what can I do? \nThe MCG Jazz team looks forward to connecting with each of you individually. If you purchased a subscription for the 2020-2021 season or if you have tickets for a concert that would have occurred in March\, April or May 2020\, we will be in touch with you to discuss your options. Please use the calendar tool below to select your preferred day and time by clicking on https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/email hidden; JavaScript is required/bookings/ \nWe need your support now more than ever. Music is a primary way that our culture is passed on and celebrated. For the past 120 years\, jazz has been at the center of American culture and will continue to be with your help. MCG Jazz is a non-profit organization\, relying on revenue from both ticket sales and contributions to bring exceptional jazz experiences to Pittsburgh. SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan & Frank Vignola Trio
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 26\,   7:30 p.m.\n \nWinner of the Independent Music Award\, Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival\, and Best World Music Guitar Player by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine\, Pierre Bensusan is recognized as one of the premier musicians of our time. \nBorn in Oran\, French-Algeria in 1957\, Bensusan’s family moved to Paris when he was 4 years old. He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7 and at 11 taught himself guitar. Influenced in those early days by the folk revival\, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond. \nBensusan has the ability to make a single guitar sound like an entire band as he brings the audience on a mesmerizing musical journey. And yet\, he is more than what any musician or music lover expects from a guitarist. He is a composer as well as a bilingual and brave improvisational vocalist\, melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique. \nFrank Vignola’s stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians\, including Ringo Starr\, Madonna\, Donald Fagen\, Wynton Marsalis\, Tommy Emmanuel\, the Boston Pops\, the New York Pops\, and guitar legend Les Paul. \nWith over 1000 engagements in the last five years alone\, Vignola has become one of the most popular and sought after guitarists on the international music scene. His genre-spanning music has brought him to 14 countries on three continents performing in some of the world’s most illustrious venues including the Sydney Opera House\, Carnegie Hall\, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco\, New York’s Lincoln Center\, and Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza\, Italy. \nVignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why The New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest stars of the guitar.”

SUMMARY:Monika Herzig’s Sheroes
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 21\,   7:00 p.m.  \nIn 1987\, the pedagogical institute in Weingarten\, Germany awarded a scholarship for a one-year exchange program at the University of Alabama to one of their students\, jazz pianist Monika Herzig. Together with her partner and guitarist Peter Kienle\, she arrived in the United States on a one-way ticket\, with one suitcase of belongings and one guitar in August 1988. \nSince then she has completed her Doctorate in Music Education and Jazz Studies at Indiana University\, where she is now a faculty member. As a touring jazz artist\, she has performed at many prestigious jazz clubs and festivals\, such as the Indy Jazz Fest\, Cleveland’s Nighttown\, Louisville’s Jazz Factory\, the W.C.Handy Festival\, Jazz in July in Bloomington and Cincinnati\, Columbus’ Jazz & Rib Fest\, to name just a few. \nCreated and led by Herzig\, SHEROES is an all-female\, all first-call talent group featuring a cast of international virtuosi including Leni Stern (guitar\, Germany/USA); Jamie Baum (flutes\, USA); Reut Regev(trombone\, Israel/USA); Jennifer Vincent (bass\, USA); and Rosa Avila (drums\, Mexico). As an ensemble of empowerment\, SHEROES is a musical force\, operating with deftness\, invention\, enthusiasm\, and ambition. Herzig does much of the writing and arranging\, but Regev\, Baum\, Vincent\, and Stern equally contribute compositions alongside covers\, including “House of the Rising Sun” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” \nSHEROES not only heralds an era of greater and deeper consideration for women in jazz but as Jazz Journalist Association President Howard Mandel affirms in his liner notes\, “That’s exactly what Monika and company does: present a model of empowerment with results that are good for everyone. Wherever you are on the gender continuum\, you’ll like it. SHEROES make music!”

SUMMARY:Kenny Werner Trio with Cyrille Aimée
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 14\,  6:00 p.m. + 8:30 p.m. \nKenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer known for his prolific output of compositions\, recordings\, and publications that impact audiences around the world. \nWerner was awarded the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his seminal work “No Beginning No End\,” a musical journey exploring tragedy and loss\, death and transition\, and the path from one lifetime to the next. Utilizing over 70 musicians\, Werner’s third album for Half Note Records is an expansive composition featuring Joe Lovano\, Judy Silvano\, wind ensemble\, choir\, and string quartet. \nBorn in Brooklyn in 1951 and grew up in Long Island\, Werner began playing and performing at a young age—first recording on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child\, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio. \nHis natural instinct for improvisation led Werner to the Berklee School of Music in 1970. From Boston\, Werner traveled to Brazil with saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil and studied with his brother\, pianist Joao Assis Brasil. This lead to “Effortless Mastery\,” his landmark opus on how to allow the master musician from within to manifest. \nImprovisation is not just a technique for Grammy-nominated artist Cyrille Aimée\, it’s a way of life. The acclaimed vocalist ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by The New York Times. \nAmong countless accolades\, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. As an actress\, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Stephen Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center which inspired her to dig deeper into Sondheim’s repertoire\, resulting in her fourth and most recent album\, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure. She’s shared her story via masterclasses\, a TEDx talk\, and a few addresses at the Conference on World Affairs.
